[QUOTE=Redwingvette]Besides the OD it uses a lock-up convertor. When it is locked your trans runs cooler.
They also have different 1st and 2nd ratios that improve take-off's.

200-4R: 2.74 first, 1.57 second, 1.00 third, .67 fourth

Turbo 400: 2.48 first, 1.48 second, 1.00 third.

Turbo 350: 2.52 first, 1.52 second, 1.00 third

The advantage to using the 200-4r as a replacement is the size. It will fit in your car without having to change the crosmember or driveshaft length. You wil need to bend the trans cooling lines a little to get them to line up with the trans and you will need to hook up a TV cable. The shifter detent will need to be altered or replaced to match the trans shift locations. I bought my setup from http://Bowtieoverdrives.com but there are others that do the same thing.

to put this in perspective...

lets use a th350 with 3.36 gears as a baseline.

first gear ratio final ratio is 8.46

and top gear is 3.36

with the 200r4...

first gear = 9.2064

then divde this by 2.52 and you get 3.6533

so a 200r4 with 3.36 gears comes off the line like a th350 with 3.70 gears
this is a very respectable change.

then at the top end..
a 200r4 with its .67 od * 3.36

runs like a th350 with 2.25 gears in the top end.

the 700r4 has a very deep 3.06 first gear

with a 3.36 final ratio is 10.2816, when divded by 2.52 yields 4.08

so a 700r4 with a 3.36 comes off the line like a th350 with a 4.11 rear end.

if you have tons of money and want to build a cool toy..

install a 6l80

this thing could turn a very pedestrian 2.73 or 3.08 rear end car into a screamer with its 4.027 1st gear producing final drives of 10.993 and 12.40 respectively

Money is a issue I wasn't prepared for this, all these upgrades sound great, but i can't do it myself and have to pay for the labor and parts.  A local shop was refered to me and yesterday I visited the shop and found out the owner has 3 corvettes. A frame off total restoration on a 72 conv, a c4 ZR1, and hes working on a 66 now. Has been rebuilding transmissions for 25 years and knows corvettes. He suggested reusing my transmissin and quoted me a price of $1700. for rebuilding my transmission and torgue conv, and taking it out and reinstalling it.

i dont want to steal anyones thread but this leaves me with some questions, when you do the 200r change over does that shifter stay the same or does that have to be change. I have been told to do this change as well when I do a trans which will be in the next year. what ratio changes will i see going from the 400 from stock to a 200r? mine is a 74.

the difference in the ratios between a 350 and 400 are insignifiant

350 = 2.52 in 1st
400 = 2.48

Finally dropped my 76 off at the shop to have the transmission rebuilt.  This guy has done frame off restorations on a c2 and a c3 72 conv and has been rebuilding transmissions for 25 years. he told me years ago he would do 3 or 4 of these a month but now hardly does any. Now he does hondas and toyotas and everything else. I stopped by after the trans was out and he showed me third gear was shot. Since he has the exhaust off I'm also getting my composite spring installed with kyb gas shocks. I'm having all 6 universals replaced,new shock mounts,strut rods and shock mounts.I'm also having  insulation installed over the trans with a foam collar, can't wait to drive it. Thanks guys for all the information.

Tony, I just missed you on this one. I decided last week to do the 700R4 conversion. My TH350 was rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago with all HD parts and I have a new TCI converter in it that has seen less miles than the trans. Letting the whole set up go for $750. Chirps second every time...

Good luck with the rebuild!
