Vette(s): 68 Coupe 496 engine, 5 speed. 660bhp.
Hello,it´s Stefan in Sweden.
I´m doing a restoration on my 68 Corvette, body off. My plans are to replace the old M21 with a Tremec 5 speed when I put the car back together.I shall put the engine and transmission in the frame before I put the body back on.
Can anybody with experience tell me what kind of dificulties I can run in to when I put the body back on ,the 5 speed is bigger. Can I keep the tunnel insulation and brackets or must it go??????? etc,etc
Thanks
Stefan

I just put my body back on with the engine and trans mounted and I had no clearance issues at all, it was also a lot easier than taking it off. Theres lots of room to work with. My only advice is to keep the gas tank off untill the body is back on, I ended up dropping the tank to make life easier.
How much larger is the tremec transmission? You should be able to take some measurements of the frame to find the difference.

I know with mine I had the body up and down more than a few times working out the body mount bolt alignment and shim heights so everything was nice and level. I took measeruements all over from the ground to the body and then standing back and looking at it from a distance until I felt good about it.

I just had a Tremec 5 speed installed in my 71, make sure you measure the size of the rear yoke and discuss with Tremec. Seems as once in a while GM installed automatic driveshafts where a manual should be. Same length, just different yoke size. They did a minor cut on the tunnel to minimize any vibration with the shifter.
