Vette(s): Looking for a 1976 Corvette
I do not want to use them (Keisler), but need HELP in order to do it!!!

I want to do this on my own but need to learn more about crossmember issues (bolt in or weld in). I am looking at a C-3 from a guy I know but not sure if its a weld in or bolt in and NEED HELP and or ideas on what I am looking at to get Tremec 5-Speed into a C-3. I know all the other stuf to do but need help on cross member/ frame issue.

If I get a C-3 with weld in cross member, and I have to cut it, will it weaken the frame on my C-3?

I do not care about modication to the car but I do not want to weaken the car if that is an issue with a weld in cross member.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

if its a stick it is most likely welded in.

I have heard that some years and even some cars within a year got a bolt in cross member for the stick.. but in all likely hood.. its welded. autos were bolted in.

it will not hurt your structural integrity.

I have heard a tko will go into a vette with a 700r4 crossmember.

bowtie overdrives sells them.

you can either put it on a rack or just feel the frame under the door and tell whether its welded or botled in.

but if I were you I would put it up on a rack.. had I done so with mine... I may not have bought it...

I also contacted Keisler & got a quote ($3305.00) for their kit. They said I'd have to wait a few months. So I was going to go for it this winter. Two weeks ago my clutch went...The jerk that put it in 2 yrs ago screwed me (cheap clutch). So I figured I might as well replace the trans if I have to do the clutch. Classic Chevy 5-Speed (www.ClassicChevy5Speed.com) had a TKO-600 in stock for $2700.00 which included a McCloud Clutch kit.
I had the whole thing in less than a week. I'll try and answer your questions. I have a 68 conv w/BB
The yoke is a quick release 1350 C6.

There is about 1.5 - 2" of clearance in the tunnel.

The parkin break has to be rerouted, I figured out how to do it without going to a longer cable..in it's present location it will hit the yoke.

I cut my crossmember short (between the exhaust holes), then put plates on each side & put a bolt through each side. I put a 28" 1/4" steel plate across the bottom & bolted it to the center section (2 bolts) with 4 2.5" X 5" sections bolted to the cross member on each side on the ends.
I had to cut out part of my console for the shifter to fit.

I have a welded stainless steel 2.5" exhaust which I cut & had 2- 8" 2.5 ID on both sides pieces made & used walked stainless steel clamps to bolt the pipes in place.
The speedomoter cable has to be modified & switched to the drivers side (I have a mechanical one).
You will have to have the drive shaft shortened about 2"
(take your measurement after the trans is in place.)
I'm waiting for the new insulation for the tunnel then I should be able to finish.
I am lucky and have a lift, which made it alot easier as this is a project that takes alittle time, but from what I've read it's worth it.
I'll be happy to send you pictures
Ask for Jeff at 5-speed...He was very helpful & they call you right back.
Alan
