Vette(s): White '79 Corvette. It's a driver.
My '79 is in for a 700R4 trans. The driveshaft will be shortened.
I want to have new U-Joints installed on the driveshaft before it goes back in.
Any suggestions on what brand of U-Joint to go with?
Pros and cons on sealed vs. grease fitting type?
Kevin

Get the "Brute Force" joints, without the grease fittings...you'll never have to worry about them again...at least not unless you're planing on using nitrous, or a blower....and even then you'll wind up breaking something else first!

How are your half shafts looking??  This may be a good time to do them also.

Corvettes and women are the same...You want to make love to them but they keep breaking down.

Hey Indy,

The 1/2 shafts were replaced by the p.o. when he had the TH350 rebuilt 8 years ago.

They show no "play" or rust. I'm thinking they're good to go.

You will love the OD on the highway. Dropped my rpm at 70 mph from 2700 to 1900

Ed,

I recall the thread you ran when you were doing your 700R4, right down to the cost of the various parts needed. Kind of like a pep talk.

And recently Paul (Lukesvette) has been adding to his own similar thread. Lots of good info. on these threads here!

It'll be nice to burn less gas on those highway trips! Can't wait to see the tach drop down!!
Soon enough.

The outfit that is going to shorten my driveshaft uses "Spicer" brand U-Joints. The guy there swears by them.

Right away I could see where this was going so I told him to proceed. I hate to waste good advice but I had some difficulty finding a place to cut the driveshaft on a street car. I want to keep the ball rolling here.                                                                                                                                      Any opinions on the "Spicer" brand U-Joints? (w.o. grease fittings)

I'm surely no expert on this kind of stuff, but from the little research and reading I've done on this if the guy is telling you Spicer with no zerks then I believe he knows his stuff and is pointing you in the right direction.

Ain't nothin wrong with Spicers, theyre used on almost every heavy duty truck on the highway,if they can dump the clutch with 80,000 lbs behind them, they should handle your Vette, course they are a little lighter LOLThumbs Up
