ShockedConfusedI have a noise only when first accelerating from a dead stop. Sounds like a loose exhaust heat shield, kind of a tinny rattle. But I have been under it and no shields are loose and I replaced the rear y-pipe and the mufflers because I had a broken muffer baffle. The noise is still there. Thought maybe I should pull the spare tire and holder to see if I still hear it.  Hope someone has heard this one before. Thanks

Clearence between the rear Y pipe and the differential is pretty close. My white 79 rattles a little bit there.

edit: come to think of it. I have a service work order from when my black 79 was brand new. Same rattle as the white one.

If your clearence is as close as mine are, jamb a wood shim between the diff and Y and take it for a spin. Won't rattle if it can't move.

Could be a u-joint on it's way out, or the front diff cushion is bad, and the u-joint is hitting somewhere.
Could also be the parking brake...something may be loose inside the rear rotor, and making a tinny noise.

Can you put it up on 4 jack stands and run it in gear while you look (but don't get) underneath. Sometimes when you are in the car the source of the noise can fool you.

Paul gets my vote... that's where I found mine.

Then when I installed the new headers 1 pipe on the drivers side would hit the crossmember and rattle at about 750 RPM. Always something......
