So, after getting great advice here, I decide to check the vacuum modulator(thingamajig) to see if it has a leak/blockage/nasty I-ain't-gonna-work attitude. Low and behold...no vacuum line
, no fitting on the manifold, WTF? I didn't even check to see if the modulator was there I'm just going to buy a new one when I pick up the vacuum line.

Yes, I should have noticed that there wasn't a fitting on the manifold but I wasn't even thinking about it. Hopefully this will be a quick fix
? At least I keep on making 1 step closer and not two back.

If this works, next issue will be the headlight adjustments, which I may leave for the gathering.

Dave,
Fill in some blanks here for a slow learner (me).
Have you driven this car before?
Did it shift correctly?
If so where did the correct parts disappear to inbetween?

Sorry John, I speak or write so often about my trials and tribulations I figure folks can just keep track of my specific situation. You know...self centered me me me
I've owned the car for 13 yrs. Drove it for 2 and decided to do brakes on the car, which led to whole new break system, which led to front suspension rebuild, which led to trailing arm rebuild. By this time, yrs later, I decided I was gonna keep this car for myself and my daughter. She was the only one of 3 kids, the other 2 being her older brothers, who took an interest in this car. I had restored a few first generation Camaros and sold them so keeping this father/daughter project became a no brainer. Now I decided I needed to work on the engine. I bought a crate motor for a little added oomph and because it was cheaper. Unfortunately, before I could install it I had to move to a place without a garage so I had someone else install the motor. To make this loooong story a little shorter, he sucked. There isn't much he did in the install that was finished or correct. So now I'm fixing one problem and moving to the next. At least it's starting and driving now.

Well.....that explains a lot!
Don't feel too bad, Dave....you're not the first to spend time trying to find a solution to problem the hard way, only to discover the solution was something really silly. In fact....that's usually how it works, anyway!

Is there a place on the manifold to put a vac. fitting? The modulator needs full engine vacuum, same as the brake booster, but not from the same place.

Joel, I attached the new vacuum line to the front of the carb(edelbrock 1406). Seems to shift fine now on a short test run. Seems like I have to bleed the brakes. The brake idiot light is on. Few other things like the temp gauge is reading about 230, electric fan not running, oil pressure gauge pegged at about 120 and most importantly, I need a radio.

Trust me John, many times I was tempted to throw the torch in the engine compartment and have a nice cookout there!

No cookouts please. I've had two friends "cook" their's. One in a house fire. Another, a Greenwood sport wagon, while his son was on a highway.
