There is a sensor just below the exhaust manifold on the right side. It's a 1972 350 engine. The sensor is round with two flat male contacts. The connector was laying on top of the manifold and it is melted. Does anyone know what this is? The water temp sensor is on the driver side. So I'm stumped.

It's for the TCS(transmission controlled spark) system. It is designed to block vacuum to the distributor until the engine is at operating temp, AND the trans is placed in high gear(3rd on autos, 3rd-4th on standards). The system also includes a solenoid to control the vacuum, a switch on the trans, and a timer mounted on the firewall.

Unless you are going for NCRS, you don't need it. Just run manifold vacuum to the distributor, which is probably what you have now.

Car is on lift right now so I can't check but I think you're right. Since it has probably been disconnected for a while the vacuum undoubtedly runs from manifold to distributor.
