have been using the wife car to look for a new and exciting job so the 72 has been sitting in the garage for over a week! i decided to take it out for a spin and turned the key and nothing. dead, moved the gear selecter , no help. ok better check the batery now, open the compartment door and found
the battery hanging down held up only by the cables. the fiberglass had beed eaten away from battery acid. when i purchaded my 72 i checked the battery and some idiot
mechanic had installed the battery sideways , so the acid would leak out. i pulled the battery out when i saw this and turned it upright, even before i bought it. when i got it home the next day i removed the battery again and dumped about 4 boxes of baking soda in the box and let it sit for a while and then hosed it out for a while but the damage was done, it was still there but had cracks and some holes in it. found out when i recharged the battery that i had left the parking lights on which killed the battery, so i'm kinda lucky that i left them on becuse it made me look at the battery before it fell out. now i'm looking for a fiberglass battery replacement kit if one's available. so far haven't found one. I could always just patch it up with fiberglass but if a formed kit is available i would rather use that.

I bondoed the hole the squirrels chewed in my battery box. Painted it black. Looks workable. Not a pleasant job, but good luck.

I recently did some fiberglass repair on a hood support pillar where the previous owner botched the job. Apparently it had been hit and he repaired it with bondo and the hood bolts were not actually holding the hood and the brace on the back side was bent and the holes were stripped. I picked up a recent copy of Rod and Custom because they had a issue on repairing fiberglass. Following their instructions my repair turned out fantastic. I used my dremel to cut out and remove all the broken and questional fiberglass and remove the body filler. Then I removed all the old paint, dirt with a wire wheel. Then I cleaned it all with denatured alcohol until the rag wiped clean. I then used 2" wide masking tape on the back side of the holes to reshape the form. You want to bridge the hole with the tape not fill it. after that I shreaded up fiberglass mat and soaked it with resin, but before I applied the fiberglass mix, I brushed the resin over the area to be repaired then applied the fiber glass over the area of the hole. Don't go beyond the hole. You will probably want to do two or thre layers expanding beyond the repair area each time until your two inches beyond the hole. You will need to let the repair dry and harden 30 minutes between each layering. After everything is hardened you can use 80 grit sandpaper to smooth out any high areas. I would sand as much as possible away to get a smooth surface. Then you can mix up some bondo with fiber fill and apply to the surface let dry, sand to a smooth surface and the paint it. You will probably want to do the same sanding and filling process on the bottom side to make it look good under the car as well. I was quite surprised how easy it was to do this repair. I was dreading it for weeks, but after I got into to it I was shocked at how easy it way. I don't remember the issue of Rod and Custom, but they may have it on their website, but it was a copy from about three months ago. Good Luch

i have done fiberglass work before on boat.s i just thought it would be easier if i had a preformed peice to glass in. i can't find that piece in any catalog, they have everything but parts under the seats or the rear compartment.
