I knew that would get your attention.

Okay....the cylinder is the wiper solenoid. It has some small holes in the end. Are these vent holes?

While the dash and instrument cluster is out it seemed like a perfect time to replace the vacuum hoses. Especially since the wipers don't work.
So I barely got started when I found my first problem. One of the hoses from the light switch goes over the speedo and tach and into a t connector. One part of the t goes through the firewall and the other goes to some sort of metal cylinder. Another hose goes to the same cylinder... this hose comes from the wiper override switch. At the end of the cylinder is a nipple that appears to have had a hose or something attached to it at some time. It could also just be closed off. I can't tell without removing the dash on the driver's side.
So what is this nipple? Is it closed? Is something missing? Could that be why the wipers don't work?
Here's the best picture I can give you. It is extremely close quarters and this is the best I can do. Sorry!

Yes, I've got the diagrams. I just wasn't sure about the solenoid.
For anyone installing new hoses...the grommet at the firewall is a real PITA!
I sure hope the hose and filter replacement fixes the wipers. Otherwise I guess we're down to actuators!

Somewhere in that info is an electrical diagram that shows the solenoid, and it should also show what hoses go where, and if there is a "vent" nipple. I'll look a little closer this eve when I get home, and see if I can help...

Yes. It was just a vent nipple. Wipers now work perfectly by the way. Main problem was torn actuator rod boot and grounding problem on the switch. Easy fixes...once you find em!
