OK here is where I'm at on the wipers. Started the car up for the first time(it did start right up) checked the wipers again and nothin' except I could here the relay clicking
. I checked the voltage going to the wiper motor and it read 11.88
. I pulled the motor and ran a couple of wires to it off the battery and it ran...OK,
now what? I put it back in and hooked it up and no go
. So this is what I'm reading on the volt meter***I know NOTHING about this crazy lectricity magic***except don't lick any plugs!

On the 3 wire plug, wire colors are Brown, Tan and Green(?). Then a black ground single female plug.
volt readings:
Black to Brown 12
Black to Tan 0
Black to Green 12
Brown to Green 0
Brown to Tan 12
Tan to Green 12
I may also have a bad alternator. I'm gonna pull it and have it tested.
Thanks

OK, wiper motor is good! Now I'll check the switch as long as I have the dash out, this should be easy.

Just checked prices on the new switch.
I really hope it's not the switch, if it is I'm installing a push button.

So, I took the wiper switch apart to clean and or fix it(thanks to Wilcox for a great article and illustration). Looks like it just needed cleaning. The ball bearing and spring fell out so I was replacing them, I installed the ball them started to put the spring in when...the ball bearing disappeared. Must have gone flying someplace onto the rug 'cause I didn't hear it bounce!
Ya just gotta laugh. Anyone know what size ball bearing is needed?

HA! now that sounds familiar.... I don't have a clue what size the ball bearing is, but when I need to go huntin' down an escaped part, I grab my "magnet on a stick" and start searching. Mine is just a big old magnet duct taped to a yardstick. Good huntin'!

johnu said: A hardware store has them in various sizes. Take a good set of reading glasses with your switch and start sizing them up!
Alright John, Have you been watching me try to get this thing apart? There are a couple of family hardware stores locally that should have a nice selection of ball bearings. I WILL be bringing a pair of reading glasses

Bob, I already tried searching the floor. To bad it's the largest area in the house.
***AHA! About a half hour after this post someone kicked it into another room and we followed the sound to it's recovery!
Now it's cleaned and back together. As soon as the weather breaks I get to test it out.

Dave,
With your wipers, did the wiper door panel open up before you cleaned up the switch? Just askin' because mine don't work either, but the dang door opens. Haven't had time to look into it yet. But any info I can get in the meantime is good. My car to-do list just keeps growing.

Jim, The 81 doesn't have a wiper door but I feel your pain. Back when I was 18 or 19 a buddies dad had a 69 the he was making his kids and kids friends restore. We had nothing but problems with the wiper door. between getting the vacuum lines right to the right screws...what a headache.
