I am going with a 427 engine replacement in my 68.
It has a 327 but it was a 427 from factory.
I am wanting to go with the HEI Distributor with tach drive. I don't want to have the ignition box or trans. ign. So what dist. would I go with? and do I need the small body one so it will fit against the firewall. I can't seem to find one of these in tach drive.
Most seem to have the ign. box requirement.
Any suggestions from the BB owners.

Good Afternoon   Question #1 do you still have OEM points distributor with TACH drive ?   Second you may be able to get the Big Cap HEI,and they do sell them with TACH drive as well for the big bucks, however any adjustments of the distributor is troublesome..Next if you do have the OEM points dist. with TACH then no problem,go to Summit Racing and look for a Pertronix Ignitor III (3) and also get their .6 or better yet their .3 ohm coil and get a hustling. It takes only 20 or less minutes to install it and you don't have to take out the distributor to change it out.  I would also change out the cap and rotor just to have all new STUFF.   I hope this may help..I have changed many of these before and have had very good success.Take care and have a great day.  Sal C

Another good thing about the Pertronix system is, you can't tell it's even there....everything still LOOKS stock, unless you do change the coil....Thumbs Up

That is correct Joel, and I usually get the guys to bu the cute little chrome "goody" to cover the brand name of the coil..Most of the Vette's I have converted (68-72) had the chrome distributor/wire hood stuff 9a real pain) and it just blended in with the set up..Take care.             nosal         Sal C

Thanks for the info.
But I went through two of the Pertronix ign. modules. The first one was bad when I bought it and they replaced it. The second one went bad after a year or so and I had a hard time figuring what was wrong with the car, it was missing so bad. After I replaced the plugs and wires, I discovered it was the Pertronix stuff I had in the dist. No more of that for me. That is when I went with the HEI dist on my 350.
I guess I could use this same dist on the big block.

Sorry to hear of your problems with Pertronix products.Firstly,I do not work for Pertronix or have any affiliation with the company, however have used the product extensively in many applications.I have a '68 Camaro that I installed an Ignitor I into in 1997 and fires everyday and runs at 100% every time.My Brother has 3 Ford  vehicles that have Ignitor I,and II for the last 10 yrs.  At a local car show there was 7 vehicles there that I installed Ignitors I and II into their distributors.  I have 3 Cars here with Ignitor III's in them and an Air Boat with a 500 hp 383 stroker that also has the Ignitor III in it's distributor..Also a fellow C3VR member ( VETTERBOB) that has Ignitor III in a '69 coupe 500+  383 stroker which I built and to date fires and runs way to fast at just a touch of the key, however I have no problem believing that you may have had a problem with the two you used,as they say in the parts business ,"babies are sometimes born dead",meaning you can buy a part that is brand new off of the shelf and it is bad.Been there done that..I will pass onto you a short story when a friend of mine went to a Ford guy here in Clearwater, most popular FORD mechanic known in the area and she had a miserable miss in her car and also a Pertronix II..  He promptly said it was the problem and changed it out for another Pertronix, low and behold NO CHANGE.I told her to have him remove and replace the OEM carb and that cured the problem..She is still running the Pertronix. I also had a guy who called me to come look at his truck that also had a Pertronix in the Ford 351W and cutting to the chase he replaced the Pertronix with another one and still the same problem.I came by, it fired and I found it was running tooooo lean.I adjusted the carb(by vacuum) and with the original Pertronix back in place, has been running everyday since (6 months)!!!!    This may have nothing to do with your problems, but just saying..Have a great day and best of luck...  Sal C
