Thanks, at least now I know what direction to go when I try to break it completely. Someone mentioned a sharp bend in the cable, does that cable need to be greased inside of it? Or for that matter does it need to be greased anywhere?
Some years may have a sharp bend in the tach cable going into the distributor. There is an aftermarket adapter available from most Vette suppliers, Ecklers, Riks, C/A, etc. I dont know if I would use anything but a light oil specifically designed for cables if anything at all. When I rebuilt my Distributor, I used a little red grease (very Little) on the tach gear. It is now working flawlessly.

At least you guys have a reset knob! Mine is missing completely. Also, the trip odometer seems to skip a tooth every so often, as it isn't in sync with the regular odometer. I guess there is nothing to do but pull that side apart!

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Dale,
My clock hasn't worked since I got it either. One thing about it though, it is right two times a day.

|QUOTE|Norsky said: The reset on my trip meter hasn't worked since the day I bought "The Toy" and I haven't tackled tearing apart that side of the dash yet. Maybe this fall I'll get a chance to work on it. In the meantime I'll be checking this thread for tips on what to look for when I finally do tear into it.|/QUOTE|
jim,
I found this Information about repairing the speedometer, tachometer. It might be of some value to the people who need it. They say to remove the whole dash. Man, I hope I never have trouble with mine.

I thought this thread was about the trip meter. How did the clock and tach get involved. Anyhow, how do you fix the trip odometer? It works fine, I just can not reset it.
A little grafite in the cable housing will free up the reset cable. It's just getting in a bind when you put it back in it's brackets. Try it ,,I'm sure it will work for you.
