I had my gauge cluster out today to change the bad temp gauge. I forgot to pull the fuse to the gauges and something arced and now my amp meter if fried. Don't you hate it when lessons are expensive?

Yes I do hate it. And although it's rare for me anymore (only with cars), I'm not immune.

Is it best to disconnect the ground at the battery whenever working on the gages?

It's best to disconnect the battery when working around any electrical. Sometimes you have to have it connected to operate and test the device you are working on. You can always disassemble an item, then reconnect the battery for testing.
