Hi All,
After my starter was fried during my trip to Carlisle in August, I had a refurbished one put in recently. For 2 weeks it seemed to work fine. Now, every so often though, it won't turn at all -just a dead click sound. 10 minutes later it works fine. There is absolutely no logic to it though. When it does turn, it is strong and quick to start. I'm obviously going to take it back to the guy who installed it. I'm just afraid I'll get there & the thing will work fine. Anyone run across this before??

Does it start fine on a cold start? Does the problem only present itself with an up to temp engine?
If these are the conditions, maybe you only need a heat shield around the starter.
There are other posts concerning just this problem. Do a search for starters.

Glenn,
Seems the colder it is, the more likely it is to start. Since this was never a problem with the old starter:
1) do different starters react differently to heat?
2) I wonder if perhaps I may have had a heat shield of some sort that was not reinstalled by the guy who fixed the starter.
Who knows -- I called the guy today & will bring it over to him Wednedsay. I told hime that unless he finds something obvious that can be tweaked, that I want a different starter!

Usually when a starter acts like you describe, it is too hot from being so close to the exhaust. does it do the same when the engine is cold, or only after been driven for awhile?
You might try the small permanent magnet starter, they can handle heat better than the larger ones. They also have more torque.
