What size alternater comes on the 80 vette? What will happen if I switch to a 100 amp alternater?

If I assume you're referring to the 350,  I believe a 63 and a 70 amp.

Replacing with a 100 amp will only harm your wallet. Possible differences in alternator physical size and pulley diameter would of course necessitate a belt size change as well.

unless your running a monster stereo/amp, or running crazy ground effect lights, the 63 amp alternator should be more than enough.

and like kevin said, the alternator case will get MUCH larger to hold the 100 amp equipment.

Yeah, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference. Now if you had a two batt setup a 100 amp alt would be what you want. I am looking at alternators also, I was thinking about getting the chrome case and slapping my stock delco guts inside. I found this and thought this was interesting, it's from Jegs single wire GM alternators.

Unique Charging Feature

A one wire alternator has a turn on point (sometimes called "cut in", which is typically about 1200 engine RPM). We have developed rotor poles and stator stacks that carry a higher magnetism thus providing an instant regulator cut in without engine acceleration. All of our 1-wire alternators are manufactured with this exclusive low cut in feature at 880 engine RPM which is much lower than any other alternator (of its type) sold. This is the speed where the internal sense circuitry connects the battery to the voltage regulator, thereby turning the alternator on. Once the voltage regulator turns on, the alternator will remain on and charging until the engine comes to a complete stop.

A 100A alternator will run slightly cooler than a 63A. The only difference is the capacity of the diodes and the stator winding. You can buy a kit from JC Whitney (and others) to convert from a 63 to either an 80 or a 100 and use your same housing. If you do the kit, go ahead and replace the bearings while you're at it. I've done the kit on me Elky, my Monte and my vette. Works like a champ. While you have it apart, you can clean up/polish the two housing halves and clearcoat it too. Anybody can do this modification. On the other hand, you can get a lifetime warrantied alternator from Advance/Auto Zone/ etc. in any size you want and forget about paying for a replacement ever again.

my 75 calls for a 41 amp or a 61 amp with a/c. someone installed a 55 amp (a/c not working). i noticed it would take a long time for the alt guage to get back to the charged position plus windows would work very slow. i installeda 75 amp chrome alt and it made a big difference as the needle on the guage would get back to zero quick and windows worked a lot easier. i also installed a set of electric fans afterwards so without the a/c working i have enough amps to run it. i also have a 100 amp in case i ever do get a/c back up and running.

a larger alt  (as long as you don't go overboard) works less as it produces the current faster. both the 75 and 100 amp alts i have gotten are the same size as the one that was in there. the only thing you have to check is the mounting positions on them to make sure it  can be adjusted right. the 75 amp is the same as the one that was in there but if i switch to the 100 amp i will have to get a smaller belt.

just something else here. understand it is a few years newer but my 90 has a 113 amp alt in it and it looks like a baby next to the ones for the 75.
