I have been rebuilding my alternator. I am sure I have every thing back
together correctly but for some reason I am getting no output. With the
car running, you can put a screwdriver to the back of the alt. and the
magnetic field of the alternator will pull the scrwedriver in, so the
alt. is doing its job. I pulled the alternator apart and have done some
comparisons on the old and new parts. All comparisons have been done by
looking to see that they are made the same and by using an ohmmeter.
Everything looks to be the same. With an ohmmeter there is some
difference with the regulator. The old regulator reads about 23K ohms
and the new regulator reads about 37k ohms. Do you think this
difference in resistance could affect the output of the alternator?
Either way, this morning I am going to put the old regulator back in with all of the new parts and see what happens. I am going to be it works. Wish me luck as I have had the alternator on and off about 4 times now and I am beginning to get tired of the on and off thing.

Sorry Man! That's the way it goes with these Old Dogs, but you have to Love It. Everthing I do on mine seems I have do at least twice. Good Luck would help if I was around.

Well, I put the old regulator back in and the Alt is now functioning
correctly. I have a 14.4 volt output at anything other than idle. I
have heard of peoples alternators not starting to charge until a
certain RPM, maybe around 2000 RPM. Maybe that was the kind of
regulator that came in the rebuild kit I got as it was an upgrade to
100 amp from stock. Glad I got this one worked out, now I have to go
and get the car aligned for the new Steeroids I installed.

There are certain alts. that won't put out @ idle, but mostly the ones on small car engines, which I don't think you have!
They do that to save a little energy, because the alt. takes power to work, but once the rpms are up above idle, the alt. puts out normally.
Sounds like you just got a bad v-reg. Glad you got 'er goin'
