Check for A/C volts. It should be very slight. You also want to check for total alternator amp output and D/C volts as well.
27.9 or 32.9 A/C volts would have caused major problems. I guessing the meter reading is off scale for these numbers.

Many thanks - one of the diode trio was not singing!
With the good instructions in hand I had it apart and analyzed in no time, took 2 auto parts stores to get the new diode trio and less than $5 later I was putting it back together.
The light no longer is on all the time and all works well.
