Hey Gang,
While driving the other day I noticed the alt guage fluttering. Got home, popped hood, and noticed the brown wire to the alt. plug had "broke" off at the plug. Tre red one is fine and the other red one that is covered by a rubber boot is fine also.( where the two red one meet together in the harness is also fine).
I ordered a new alt. plug with wires from Eckler's. Got it today in the mail. Before I hook this up I just need to make sure of one important issue so I don't burn anything up.
Original wires from the alt. plug into the wiring harness are red & brown. Don't know the gauge of the wires but the red one is "thick" and the brown one is "thinner". The wires on the new plug from Eckler's are red & white. Both are the same guage, "thick".
I'm assuming; red to red & white to brown. Correct? This will look like S---! when it's hooked up but I don't know what else to do. Especially since there is only appx. 3" of new wiring. Any other suggestions? Can I somehow fix the original plug & wire?
Thanks.

Auto Zone sells replacement connector ends that work just fine and are a whole lot cheaper than a new alternator.
As for the wires being different a quick call back to Ecklers should supply you with an answer that might prevent any damage and speed up an exchange if necessary.
Although I believe it will work and does hook up as you indicated.

As Larry stated, you can just replace the connector, if you use the new pig tail stagger the connections so they are not side by side so that it is not as bulky, then you can put plastic convex tubing to hide your connections and wiring form the inner fender or neatly wrap electrical tape down the length of the wires and over the connections and past to the plug.

The thicker red is still the thicker red. The thin white one will attach to the thin brown one.
If you want to double check, the thick one will have voltage to it all the time. The thin one will have voltage only with the key on. It will read 12 volts with the connector unplugged, and less with it plugged in.
