I have never used the Zip kit, but have done many using NAPA kits, always with good results. Make sure you get the one with the diodes, bearings, brushes, etc. It doesn't take any special tools. It is easier to get the big nut off the pulley with an impact, but it can be done without. Use a straightened paper clip to hold the brushes back to slip the shaft back in.

Wow Numbers. My car is in the shop now so I will have to wait until I get it back to look for the casting number. Would they be visible without taking the alternator off?

Hey TUX, I have what I believe to be Original altenator for my 72'. They told me it was WAAAY less expensive to buy a re-built, so I did. Do you have a list for the 72 codes? I may want to do mine myself and put the Numbered one back on. TANKS

IF the alternator is working properly and supplying the correct amperage, you just need the diode trio. Common problem and not too hard to replace. kstyer 2010-01-01 12:20:42
