I disassembled and reassembled two late 70s alternators over the weekend, swapping only the cases between them for the nos. and date. I keep wondering why one of them had a resistor across the regulator and the other did not. I figure it must not be necessary as the one without it is the one that's been in the 78SA since 79(that's the date on it). I did put the resister back into the other(now spare) alternator, along with all new insides and bearings except for the rotor and stator. What's the purpose of the resistor? Mike
Anyone know what a 1103053 alternator is from? Can't find it listed as for any Corvettes. Dated 79

The resistor is there for helping the alternator start charging at lower rpm. Without it the engine has to rev a bit higher before it starts charging. If the car starts at fast idle you will never notice the difference.
In addition, if the voltage drops and the system starts to fail, the alternator light will come on with or without the resistor. With the resistor, and the correct regulator, it will also warn you of overcharging.
