Topic: Always a problem
in Forum: C3 Electrical
I finally installed my stereo system, and I must say I am extremely pleased. The Alpine radio, Alpine 360 Amp, and the Infinity Speakers are superb ! I was on the verge of buying the rear speaker inclosure that Ecklers and CA sell for $200.00 but would have made it difficult to store my tops. Thanks to Brian (Redwingcorvette) I saved $175.00
he provided a picture of a very simple solution that he used to mount his rear speakers. All it took was a piece of 3/4 in plywood cut to 43"x9" (free) Home Depot has a thin grey cheap carpet that I bought for 6.00 and some Extreme velcro 5.00. I got 2 cans of black spray fabric paint, 10.00 and 2 6x9 speaker box's 15.00 (both from Pep-Boys). I glued the carpet to the plywood, stapled the edges, painted it, painted the speaker box's (they were grey) stapled the velcro under the speakers box, and platform and I must say it came out great. It's not as fancy as some of the professional stuff I've seen some of the other members have, but it was cheap, simple, and works !
Now for the problems, there's always a problem, at least for me. Since I didn't want to damage my orginal bezel, I got a replacement from Direct Source which was already cut out for the newer radio for 225.00 I could have purchased a normal replacement for 100.00 and made the cut myself, can't blame anyone but myself for that.
While screwing around with the bezel (it was a pain in the a_ _) and trying to install the wiper switch unit, I poked a F%#@*! hole the size of a silver dollar on the top of my dash I didn't realize how brittle leather can become, it broke like a thin plastic ! I've also noticed that my interior lights, and clock stopped working
I'm hoping that it's only a fuse, and not some obscure wire that I managed to break. Bottom line, the system sounds awsome !
Lets see the pics of the speakers
As for stuff not working, check the ground to the cluster plate. I added a ground wire directly to the back of the gage cluster.

Sorry to hear about the gouge, I know that hurts!!!! Just a post with a
request for a pict when you get a chance, I just bought speakers and have
been putting off spending the $$$ for the back speaker bar (that's a lot of
cash) and your solution sounds perfect. Fortunetly I already have the
after-market Corvette fit system installed, just need speakers and amp.
Where did you place the amp, under the seat or under the passenger side
dash?? Thanks
Lowbrowser,
I plan to take pictures today, I'll most likely ask for help on how to post them. At worse, I'll e-mail you and Redwingvette pictures. I placed the Amp on the platform between the speakers, I cut the board just wide enough for the Amp not to over hang. The one slight draw back is that my rear interior light is blocked. I was told that you shouldn't hang an Amp upside down, or sidewides.
Once you see the pictures, you'll appreciate on how simple and effective it really is. No drilling, modifying, or cutting of any kind. Want to take it down ? Easy enough, disconnect the wires, lift the speaker box off the platform (Velcro) and lift and remove the platform ! It should look great.
