Amp meter not working

After pulling, rebuilding, and replacing the engine out of my '75 this winter, the amp meter is not working.  I'm sure the alternator is working because it gets hot after running a while.
Any ideas on what may be the issue?

I had posted a few months ago a question about a black wire in the starter wiring harness, and this is related.  After reading some other posts on this forum about the amp gauge, I realized that this wire is for the amp gauge, and should have been fastened to the large lug on the starter motor.
With this now in place, the amp meter now works!
I wonder how the engineers cooked up this method way back then?
