The plug that connects to the top of my alternator has only one red wire attached to it however the plug has two terminals. Is it correct to have just the one wire? Also, I noticed the red wire is pretty loose and worn out. Could this be part of the reason that my battery is not holding a charge as described above? I am having my alternator checked today to see if it is bad. Thanks again for all of your help

One wire systems are fine. If the terminal is loose, though, it can absolutely create a no/low charge. Also, if the alternator has an internal problem, it can drain the battery.

I had my alternator checked and it is good. My next step is to replace the pigtail connector at the alternator as it is old and cracked. The positive wire that goes into the pigtail is also old and freyed. Hopefully this will take care of my problem. Thanks again to all!
Adam is right. If the turn signals work with the headlights off, but not when the lights are on, the problem is most likely a bad ground.

First check the ground strap from the block-to-frame and the negative battery cable connection to the frame. Check it again. And again. Not trying to be funny - those two can be funky sometimes. We all feel your pain - I'd say everyone here has fought the eloectrical gremlins at least once...
I have checked and cleaned and rechecked the ground wire from the battery to frame and the ground from the engine. I recently purchased a new alternator pigtail because the old was corroded. My question is this, on the new pigtail it has a red and white wire. My old pigtail ran only off the red wire to the alternator. The wires on the new pigtail are about 6 inches long. Should I splice into the existing wire so I can use the new pigtail or will this interrupt the integrity of it. Just want to make sure before I go doing anything!!! Thanks for the help, I need it!

Try this, make sure your alarm is turned off! On early 77's the alarm is on the front fender,later 77's the alarm is in the door lock. If the fender lock is left in the on position and the alarm horn is defective it will drain the battery continually. I had this very situation and turning the alarm off solved it.

I don't believe that mine even has an alarm. It's not on the fender and I have noticed nothing on the door lock. If I have an alarm it surely is not wired up. Previous owners of the car have unfortunately done a bubba job with different things. Is any one able to advise me on the new pigtail connector to the alternator and how I should go about installing it? Thanks again!
Just a thought guys, should I soder the new pigtail wire together as opposed to just splicing it? By sodering it might give it better conductivity. Please let me know what you think, thanks, Matt

You can splice into the old wire with the new pigtail, no problem. The "extra" wire you don't need/use can be taped up in the harness.
Soldering the joint will be much better than just twisting the wires together. Best would be to use a solder-able butt connector(ha-ha-ha...he said "Butt"
), and then use heat shrink tubing on it. Put the tubing on before soldering the connection, tho!
