You can ground anywhere on the engine, or even the alt. bracket. If you're readings are at the batt, then the voltage is getting there from the alt, so that should be good.
I'm thinking a ground problem still in the cluster area. The proverbial "Needle in the Haystack" syndrome..

I just had the same problem just yesterday, dim guage light, I took my car to NAPA and had the alternator checked and the voltgage was bad. I replaced the alternator and light is out, no charge, the alternator is lifetime warranted. good luck, Gene
