OK I have some issues and they are not from my mom. As before I put a battery disconnect switch on the battery because something was draining the battery. I plan on dealing with this latter after I work on the front end. But it seems that the battery is draining while the car is running? I would drive the car turn it off and try to start it and it seems that the battery is drained I then disconnected the battery while the car was running and the engine stayed on so it could not be the alternator. Any thought?

it may be the regulator. what you describe is the symptoms a bad regulator shows. if it is bad even with the car running it won't charge battery right and sometimes even with the car off battery will go dead.

Eddie is that a battery regulator? The battery gage does not show any movement - or +

every car has a regulator. i am pretty sure yours is external. follow wires from alt and they should go to a black box mounted in engine compartment. that is the regulator.

A '70 should have an internal voltage regulator...inside the alternator...my '69 does. I believe '68 was the last year Vettes had an external regulator.

Disconnecting the batt. while the engine is running is not recommended, tho it can indicate if the alt. is putting out. The voltage spikes from doing this can damage the voltage regulator, which is indeed internal to the alternator.
I would suggest you have the alt. tested. A bad diode trio, regulator, or rectifier bridge can cause the alt. to drain a batt.
Have you checked to see if the alt. was actually charging the batt? With the engine running at idle, you should show at least 12 1/2-13 1/2 volts at the batt. With the engine at 1200-1500rpm, it should be 14 1/2 or more volts, up to around 15. (Or more would not include 16 volts and up!)
If the alt is putting out the correct volatage to the batt., but the car will not start after driving, then I would suspect a bad batt.(or connections) New doesn't mean good.
You would have to have a major short in the system to kill the batt. in just a few minutes.

So testing the battery voltage I would put a volt meter on the terminal while the car is running?

sorry guys, confused the last year of points (74) in corvettes with the inner and outer reg. one thing that was not mentioned was how old the battery was. if the the car stays running usually the alt. would be good. if it wasn't putting out anything car would die out even when running. it could very well be the internal reg either sticking or being bad which can drain the battery when car is off (had it happen). from what i remember, it wasn't that much more to replace the whole alt.  than to open in up and just install a reg.

Put the positive lead of the v-meter on the pos. terminal of the batt., and the negative lead of the voltmeter on the neg. term. of the batt.
