Vette(s): 1978 Corvette Light Blue Pulled from the swamps of Miami! Its a driver and back on the road!
Ok since I have had the car the stereo worksone day then not the next, so while waiting to see if I m rebuilding the transducer now (90degrees) or waiting for the fall I decided to tackle the radio.

I have a simple panasonic cd/fm playerd. So I have a black/ground yellow /pos battery12v and a Red/12v acc

The original hook up seems like someone rewired a yellow/black/gray to match the original wire. Only the Yellow and Black were hooked up.

So I ran a new black to ground for /black
ran a new yellow from battery 12v for the /yellow radio wire
and now I have a red radio wire for the acc/12v  and no wire from the vette to hook this up to????

Also I have the wire form the antenna to the radio fused to blue wire from radio and asume it going tothe antenna and the antenna did work but now not working.

Where is the acc wire from the corvette???

It was hooked up previously without it??? I think he had both red/yellow hooked up to the battery  except it only worked  with key in ignition so it was getting to the acc wire somehow.

I just thought I would run alll new wire to the back of the radio but dont know where to get the acc for the Red wire from the radio for acc???

ANy help will be appreciated BB78

Smile  Ok cancel the warning. My stereo is back and running as planned. Found the problem as the colors were mixed up yellow/orange and the orange wires for the acc and the pwr to antenna were somehow cut and taped together but no bare wire extended so no contact..... Just ready to quit for the day on the project but now all is well.  I know someone else was having stereo problems but really just 3 wires are usually the issue.
Get the ohm meter out and just trace the wires or just run new one's from the batter and the ground and then find a Orange acc/hot wire for the third and tap in or find the original wire to the radio then to the antenna control wire.  Sorry for the prior post.  Now back to the transducer???

Always something...Bought one rear speaker panel grill and holder at Carlisle and tried to install it but realized its not for the 78 will not fit right.... I think I willjust pay more and get the new/correct one, too many times taken that it's for a 1978???? Beware!  BB78Clap

I am planning on installling a new stereo system in my 78, leaving the factory radio in place. The current challenge is mounting new 6x9 speakers in the back, replacing the "dummy" panels.

It seems that the dummy panels but found that the newer 6/9 speakers usually have a larger cone/magnet that will not fit. The original are smaller and fit into the opening/depth that the 78 has. I did get them in but not attached to the mounting frame as they were too big. But they do fit behind the speaker mounting bracket and with the car installed you cannot tell.  Good Luck! Hi BB78, Thanks for the reply! I just checked and yes you are correct about the aftermarket 6x9 magnet and basket being too big for the factory opening. I was given the speakers as a gift so to use them in the back it looks like I will go with small speaker boxes. My plan is to use a 2-channel power amp and a portable player (ipod or mp3) directly into the amp. The factory radio will still be playable thru the front 4x6 dash speakers.

Hey guys, if you use 5X7 speakers in the back they will fit flush. Thats what I did! Used Boston Acoustics units. Sound pretty good!

Hi Barry, thanks for the reply!  This 78 Vette did not have rear speakers, so now my plan is to use a board across the back with cutouts for the 6x9's, and to mount the amp between them.   Joe

That will work! Mine had the factory speakers so I wanted to keep it looking original.

I got my 6/9 to fit but not flush with the speaker grill but still work ok and unable to see it with the carpet grill on. But now it sounds like I need to get me some of those Boston Acoustic's, wow always something to spend the money on! (like a radiator support?) Nice color Jaws 79Thumbs Up
