Hey Folks!
The 'Check Engine' light on my '82 stays on constantly. Would this result from my smog pump not running ... Or do I have a different problem?
Thanks for the advice!
Jeff

A blown fuse, or defective alternator could cause the light to stay on. You really need to check codes to see what the ECM is saying is the problem.
Find the ALDL connector and jumper the "A" and "B" terminals, then turn the key on. Watch for the "Check Engine" light to flash. Count the flashes and write them down.
To interpret the flashes, a code "12" would be one flash, followed by two quicker flashes. It should actually start with a code 12, indicating the ECM is in diagnostic mode. Any codes stored will follow a code 12. A code 33 would be three flashes followed by three quick flashes.
Pull the codes and let us know what you get.

Hi Jeff,
Your socket for the code reader is under the ash tray. I bought a cheap plugin that does what Adam was talking about. The readings are made with the engine off.
Tell us a bit about your 82. Is it stock? Is the original Cross Fire Injection still installed? Do you have a service manual for the 82?

Hey guys! Thanks so much! I'm going to go check the codes and see what I find. I'll let you know! As far as my '82... Yes, it's pretty stock...original cross-fire injection. Only a few parts have been replaced, alternator, water pump, ignition, fuel pump...stuff like that.
Thanks!
Jeff

I'm pretty sure the VSS code would not turn on the Check Eng light. I'm absolutely sure the code 43 ESC would..btdt.
I prolly have the troubleshooting chart here somewhere, if no-one else has it handy.

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
I PM'd you the 43 Troubleshooting tree form the my GM manual. I tried to load it so I could link but that did not work for me so you get a PM instead.
Wow...you guys are THEE best! Thank you SO much for the assistance. Now I'll dive in and see what I can do. I'm sure I'll be back in touch needing more help!
Talk to you soon!
