Okay, I am now fed up with ignition adjustments. I just want to drive the car and not worry about it. I will abandon temporarely learning about the ignition on a non-HEI. I am planning to keep all the parts I replace to be able to go back later (still want to learn it, but for now, just want to drive it!)
I just found the following electronic ignition kit. I know that most of the people here swears by MSD, but I would like to keep it simple and on a low budget. It claims what I am looking for; drop it in and forget about the timing.
Anybody tried that kit ?

I have the Crane Cams XR-1 ignition kit in my 73, works great.Take your points out, put in the kit hook up 2 wires, set the timing, your done.I did gap my plugs .005 wider.

You can get one of the magnetic pick ups and eliminate the points issue. Try ebay and look for the Pertronix II Ignitor. You probably want a hot coil to go with that. I'd say about $140 will get you both. I like the Ignitor II because you can't hardly mess up installation. With the originals, if you hooked a wire up you burned it up. Not with the II.

I agree go with the Pertronics, get the coil to, its easy to install.
I'm glad you guys said Pertronix, cause I bought the Flame Thrower II coil by mistake 2-3 weeks ago and I was about to return it.
At lunch today, I stopped by a performance shop in my area and order the Ignitor II for 90$. Will have it tomorrow at noon.
Thanks for your comments.
Lynne73, thanks for saying "set the timing", cause I was under the impression that I didn't had to; and I would have been wondering why it doesn't do as well as expected.
74,
I just put in the Ignitor II with the Flame Thrower II coil.
To be safe, I had a friend pull the distributor & rebuild it to aviod any play between the magnetic pick-up and the sensor. Then we re-installed it & set the timing.
I really like the fact that I was able to keep the stock tach drive distributor. I threw in new plugs & wire too.
Good luck,
Anthony
Done!

I pulled the distributor out last night, installed the Ignitor II and flame thrower II coil and it fired right up! Still have to do the timing, but should be good to go!
Here's the funny side of it : before I pulled the distributor out, the car wouldn't start because I messed with timing of it and couldn't get it to start again. So I figured I would remove one of the variable (dwell adjustment) and go with the magnet right away. Even if it was out of timing, I still marked the distributor. I had a hard time putting it back exactly on the mark, because the rotor would rotate counter-clock wise when putting it back. It ended up a little bit off (by 1/4" of my original marks). I figured there's no way the car would start, but IT DID! First shot, no hesitation, and idle smoother than it ever did.
(I wish I knew what I did to make it work, so I could learn something...)

It was over 6 weeks now that I didn't hear my engine idling. I was so happy, I almost cried!

On idle, I can hear and see the difference. Can't wait to try it on the road. Probably won't be this weekend, since I'm still waiting for other interior parts to put it back together.
One thing; the gaps might not be to specs. My low gap might be a bit too close and the high gap is way bigger than the specs. I could limit the high gap with the rings they provided, but I'll try it out like that first.
The rotor rotates due to the design of the gears. My guess is the idle problem was due to timing way off, and now by luck or by gosh, you got it a lot closer. Now you just need a timing light to make it right.
