Yep, been here done that. Punch the Cruise button and afterburner kicks in !!
I expect your problem to be the same as mine... inside the transducer are two disks, face to face.
One is continuously driven via the speedo cable from the gearbox. In a properly working system this disk "influences" the second disk to try and rotate, but the second disk rotates against a spring, and so will only turn so far - ie through an arc until the spring pressure stops it from going any further. The faster you go, the faster the first disk spins, the greater the arc the second disk achieves. In my afterburner system years of gunk had got between the two disks so that the second disc was always being driven to its maximum possible arc irrespective of speed, due to the high level of gunk friction between them.
The fix is to dismantle the transducer and and clean. I have a pdf set of instructions on this is you would like it, email me at cdowns@clear.net.nz and I will send it to you.
