Vette(s): 1976 Stingray matching numbers. Stock 350 rebuilt, comp cam, roller rockers, push rods, 2.02 valves, +.30 flat tops, frontend & suspension rebuilt Dec 08. Interior from firewall 90% July. New exhaust, Collector plates, Paint will have to wait...& wait.

Just redoing the dash now and I find a small light grey wire (looks like it came from the light by the windshield wiper switch as there is none there now) it is crossed over and spliced into the small brown wire from the headlight switch??? Everything else looks normal :):):) so far. I have not had the car running much so unsure of what this has been done for, any ideas? I looked through my 76 assembly manual with no luck as to the wire colors from the headlight switch. I looked back through the threads and see Adam had a wiring diagram he sent out to some members a few years back, have not been able to get one, any chance of getting a copy for the 76? So much for week to do the dash, now waiting for a new dash pad etc, etc. but it will be worth it right???

Thanks a lot for the help.

Eric...

I worked on my 1975 dash and had a light with a small blue bracket. I did find it in the AIM, but it was hard to find. Anyway it attaches with a screw to wiper switch.
Good luck

Grey wires on our cars are usually used for instrumentation lamps...the ones that light up so you can see the gauges.
Sounds like Bubba had a light that didn't work, so he just connected it directly to the headlight switch.
I can e-mail you the '76 diagram, but I can't do it from home...it's over 7mb, and I'm on dial-up here.Wits End
I can send it from the shop tomorrow, tho. It will be a "zip" file, so it will be small enough to send, at just about 6mb.

Thanks Joel, (sorry I called you Adam before) yes I picked up on the small grey wire being instrument panel lights, as a matter of fact it is the one next to the windshield wipers but there is no bulb, as that is the end they spliced into so its like it is back feeding or feeding the light switch from the grey wire. I can't figure out what it is doing, tomorrow I will disconnect and see if I can trace it down I guess. The wiring diagram will help. It would have been very difficult to splice in so it is bothering me.
Thanks again,
Eric...

Here is a photo of the one I installed, I'm just getting the dash back in shape. Hope this helps.

Hey Eric, I have a spair wiring harness that came out of a 76 that I used to repair my original harness in my 76. It's out in my parts stock in the garage along with my wiring diagram. Did you still need a bulb ? I have a few spairs. I did my dash and wiper switch and harness section a few years back. Would be glad to help anyway I can just let me know.

Steve,

It is worth the money to buy a wiring diagram from Doc Rebuild.  It shows the wire color and the exact connector.   It was a huge help when I did my dash.

He has them from 1958 to 1978.

Anthony

Thanks to all that have responded. Received your mail Joel, very big help chasing everything down. I could not figure why some one would jump from the light switch to a dash light as the dash would have had to be removed to do it, so fix the problem what ever it was...  This car sat in a shed for some years so it had mice at one time and I was worried the little buggers had bared some wires no one could find, so I dug deeper into the wiring untill I was looking through the firewall. Nope, all the wires were good.  Seems the light switch was not working properly so they back feed all the dash lights directly from the headlight switch. It would have been easier to fix the switch????? Oh well  I have piece of mind with the wiring and it is all retaped and back in with a new headlight switch, oh yea everything works now. I was going to do it one day anyway, so now I tested the heater core and "cleaned" all the ducting so "no" traces of mice left behind and I can put in the new carpets, seats etc etc and the interior will be done (this time). Just a little story to add and thanks again for all the help. Enjoy.Thumbs Up
