Easiest way to tell is look under the hood for the pin-switch, and inside the door jambs, below the striker where the door closes on the latch. If there are pin-switches there, the car had the alarm. I don't remember when the alarms were made standard equipment, off-hand, but I think it was '77 or '78.

PIN SWITCH
The alarm is activated when you lock the door on the late '77s, but the early '77s had the key-switch in the fender. It's bascically just a hot circuit, with a relay, and a flasher. When the pin-swich grounds the circuit, the flasher beeps the alarm horn. The pin-switches are under the hood, and on both door-jambs, so when the door/hood was opened, the pin would ground, and the alarm would sound. Later cars also had switches on the t-tops.
I have some diagrams at the house, if you need them.

Hi Timgman, My 77 has a factory alarm and it works just fine. It did not work when I bought the car, my mechanic hooked the wires under the hood correctly and it works. It is a switch alarm not a fender key alarm. Gene gs77vet 2006-10-30 13:06:14

Actually, I made a typo on that post.
The alarms were made standard on the '73s, when they deleted the removable rear winder. What I really meant to say was when they changed to the door-lock key activation, instead of the fender key. Very early '77s still used the fender mounted key-switch, and then it went to the door-lock activated.
