I have a 383 engine and I am running with a Mallory HEI distributor/ magnetic pickup/ vacuume advance /high output coil. In the last 1.5 years I have burnt one coil and two ignition modules for no obvious reason. I am considering changing out the distributor. My thoughts were leaning towards a similar MSD distibutor with ign module in the dist housing (Street Fire) or (Ready to Run Series) or the GM Performance distributor that they recommend for the ZZ383. Both of these are availible locally.
Suggestions?

I went with the MSD Streetfire and have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with it. Seems to be a consistent hot spark and easy to tune.
I have heard several of the guys over the last few years around her having problems with Mallory ign parts. When I went shopping, I was looking at Mallory, MSD and the GM PD, but the local vette tuner guy said he had seen the most luck with the streetfire.
Good Luck!

Hey Bernie (FLA VETTE),
Just an idea here;
The Summit catalogue has an MSD HEI kit that includes cap, rotor, coil and module. (Its about $150.00)
My thought is that the problem components on your Mallory unit could be replaced with the better quality MSD components.
However, I'm not a mechanic or an expert by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm wondering if this would help. Hopefully others with more knowledge and experience can chime in.
Mallory requires a ballast resistor, I do remember that from when I ran Mallory on some of my motors. I never had a moments problem with them.
The have their own ballast resistor that they recommend, I would cough up the extra few bucks for theirs just so there is no question.

Thanks for the responses.

The local speed shops carry the MSD streetfire in stock and also recommend it.
I think if I were to change out the components I would likely just change the whole distributor since it is almost the same cost.
The factory knowledge base indicates that this particular distributor does not use a balast resistor and you should remove it if you have one when installing this distributor.
Any comments on the ready to run series? They seem the same except billet +$100?
I have not totally given up on the Mallory yet. I want to find/eliminate anything else that may be causing my problems first.
