My 77s drivers side power window will go up but not down.  This happened once before about a year ago, then started working again and has ever since.  Passenger side works fine up and down.  So now that the window is all the way up it"s a pain with this great weather.   So can I rule out the motor and relay and go right to the switch?   Does this switch come apart to file/clean contacts?  I had it out when I replaced the console but it looked like a sealed unit from what I remember.   I guess I could spring the $20.00 for a new oneEmbarrassed!!

Thanks!!

Definitely sounds like the switch, had the same problem on my white 79, but in reverse. And YES, the switch can be opened up and cleaned. There are copper leaves inside that get burned, sand off the burn marks and good as new. Bend the tangs up to open it up, don't worry if some break off. Plenty of material along the sides to restake over to close it back up again. Pay close attention to the orientation of everything when you open it up, if you put things back in 180* off the switch will work opposite of how it's supposed to. I've fixed switches in the wife's 98 Malibu with the same results. Nothing inside really wears out.

DON'T buy a new one! I've been trying to get someone to fix one for years! I guess I'm cheap. Also, you can get it out just taking the carpeted side panel off the console. I think it's a 5/16 wrench.

Goter done today!!  Filed the badly burned contacts only to fined out the plug was not locked completely into the window motor!!  Works better than ever, up and down!!Big%20smile

Also mounted the remote drivers side mirror cable and bezel in the door panel, that had never been mounted.  Didn't even know it had one until I took the door panel off a year ago to get the car painted.  The cable was laying in the bottom of the door. Got the bezel a year ago when I found that out.  Guess it's about time I put it in!!  All in all a productive day!!
