I have an old Sears dwell-tach meter that has two leads. One clip is red the other black. Anyone know where to hook this up to check rpm's?

I believe one should go to the positive battery post and the other to the negative side of the coil. Actually, I'm a bit surprised that there's no negative wire for a ground, but it's been a long time since I've dealt with one of those.
Go to the Sears website. They have a service there you can get an owners manual for it. It may be nothing more than a photocopy of an original manual, but that's still good.

they use to connect them to a pass through "spring" that went between one of your plugs and the wire.
on hei distributors.. you can connect it to the tach lead off the dist cap.

All this has is two alligator clips. I tried red to neg. side of coil and black to ground. Didn't work. Maybe this thing doesn't work anymore.

the one I have still has the spring
the alligator clip was put on the spring.
you put the spring between the dist cap and the plug wire.. then clipped the red alligator clip to it

the red goes to positive and the black goes to negative. there should
be another clip that goes to the negative side of distributoror to the negative side of coil on cars without hei ignition..
sometimes they have a green plastic shield with a clip inside or even a
female butt connector to slip on the cotact.

Maybe there should be another clip, but there isn't, only two. This thing is about 20 years old, so who knows. I'll try what Ben said tomorrow. Hopefully it'll work.
