Vette(s): 1980 RED Coupe 400 Engine 700R4 Trans.
Put a single wire alternator on my car and it ran fine for almost a year. The regulator went bad in it and I put a standard alternator with the two wire plug, hot wire and ground wire on the car and when I turned the key off, the engine would not shut off. I have to pull the two wire plug out of the alternator before it will shut off. Need Help. |headscratch|

You can call Powermaster regarding this, but if I remember correctly if you eliminate the regulator and go to a one wire altenator you must stay with a one wire altenator. If you hot wire it, then what you have done is bypass the ingition switch so the coil continues to receive power even with the key off and the engine will continue to run. My Dad showed me this many years ago in case I ever lost my key.

You don't say what year your car is, but I assume it is an 80 from your tag. The 69 up use an internal regulator, so this will not apply to a 68 (or external regulator). The main terminal (red wire) goes straight to the battery, terminal 2 (red wire)can also go straight to the battery. That leaves terminal 1, or the small brown wire. That wire is the "turn-on" for the alternator field. I think that your new alternator has a defective regulator that is feeding back into the ignition circuit. Suggest taking your new alternator to a shop and have it tested. I'll bet the regulator is bad or you have somehow reversed the wires in the double plug. If the regulator is good, and it is wired correctly then probably the next thing to look at is the ignition switch. It should disconnect the field wire from the coil power wire when the ignition is turned off.
