If I have my hazards on and press the brake, the hazards stop flashing. Is this normal for this year? (1979)

Yes, It shows that the vehicle is stopped or slowing down, opposed to being stopped with a hazzard/dangerous situation. When you release the pedal the hazzards should continue to flash to indicate a potential problem.  Mark
