So its always done this (on the 70) so I just thought it was supposed too but:
The red "headlamps" light on the dash stays on when the lights are on at night.
It isnt that big a deal but was just wondering what kind of troubleshooting I could do as I gather it is not supposed to stay on.
Both headlights work fine.
Ideas?

One(or both) of the headlight warning switches has broken...that's the most common issue, since they are made of really cheap plastic. If you look up under the front of the car, at the headlight buckets, you'll see the wiring that goes to the switch...and you'll usually see part of the switch hanging from the wire if it's broken. I may have a pic somewhere, but...I wouldn't count on finding it soon!

Thanks so much Joel!
That is the kind of help I was looking for.

I was just able to fix this issue on my 74. It seems the previous owner's fix for a broken switch was to tie-wrap it to part of the headlight so it wouldn't hang down??? Some fix! Thanks to some direction from WetVet and T-Mans70,73 on our cruise to Stonehenge, I was able to locate the switch, order one and fix the problem. It happened to be the driver's side switch that had sheered off. I've included some pictures of the new one in place. Thanks a lot guys. That annoying light is now gone...

As seen from laying under the front end, looking up through the access hole...

A little closer view...

A little closer, although blurry... Notice the little plunger that gets pressed down at full open, turning off the interior warning light.
Installed and fully functional. Thanks again C3VR members...
