I've been meaning to change out the headlights - both lows work, one high beam is out, and they're all really dim. So on my way back from a trip to the store, I stop at AutoZone and pick up a set of halogen low and high beam lamps. The first bezel came off ok (missing one screw though). I got on of the three screws out holding on the trim ring on the left low lamp. THe other two heads were rounded beyond hope. I'm doing this at 10:00 at night, so a trip to Sears is out of the question. Tomorrow morning I'll go pick up a set of screw extracting bits. It's always something - isn't it? I went ahead and placed an order for all new screws. At least this also gives me a chance to give the bezels a good cleaning and waxing.

Sometimes the hardware store has stainless steel screws that fit just right.

my trim rings are messed up too. got new ones from ecklers. as soon as
some other stuff gets done will install.just a suggestion here. i
wouldn't waste the time or the money on sears screw extractors. if they
are the ones they show on tv, most of the time they just grind the head
off but occassionally they do work. you can do the same with a dremel
tool grinding the head of or you may want to try a reverse drill bit.
sometimes with the bit the heat loosens it up and it will unscrew
itself actually doing what the screw extractors are supposed to do.

Another thing you can do is to spray either penetrating oil or wd40 on the screws and let them soak for awhile. Then try to get them out. Works for me a lot of the time.

I got the new lights in this evening. Took each sub assembly out (lamp, trim ring, and cup) and soaked the screws holding the trim rings with penetrating oil. Then I used the bench vise to hold the exposed part of the screw so I could work it loose. Took a little time for all of them, but I got them all out . New lights are in and I must say the halogens make a huge difference. I'll fine tune the alignment after this cold spell passes...
