82 CE with previous headlight switch problems.  New switch works well, but now when I pull the switch on the 7.5 A fuse to the instrument lights blows.  Pulled the IC out and nothing looks like it's shorting.  What I don't understand is that fuse according to the manual works for the tail lights and side markers.  Those still work even after fuse is blown!  What am I missing?  Any ideas?   Thanks in advance!!!!!!

The wiring diagram shows the 7.5 amp fuse for the instrument cluster lighting(inst lps) only...
The tail lamps are on a separate 20 amp fuse(tail lp) with the license plate light, and the rear side marker lights.

If you didn't have the blown fuse issue before changing the switch, I'd have to say the switch is the culprit. That is, unless moving the harness to replace the switch has caused a short in the harness somewhere. It could happen.

Thanks, although I could swear the owners manual is wrong.  If I did mess up the harness, how could I check where the short is?

Didn't mean to imply that you messed it up!
It just happens sometimes when moving an old harness around.
Why did you change the headlight switch in the first place?
If you did not have the issue with the fuse before, why not plug the old switch back in for a test, and see if the fuse still blows? If it does not, then you have a bad switch. If the problem is now there with the old switch, then you've got a short between the switch, and either the dash cluster lights, or the gauge cluster lights.
Start by unplugging the connector for the dash(speedo/tach), and see if the short is gone. Then unplug the gauge cluster connector. If the fuse still blows with both connectors unplugged, you'll need to start tracing the wire(s) from the switch out to the two connectors.
There is a dark green wire that goes from the light switch to the fuse box, thru the "Inst Lts" fuse, then it comes out as two gray wires. One gray wire goes to the dash cluster lights on circuit #8. The other goes to the windshield wiper switch(for the light there), then it splits off to the console(gauge) cluster lights, and the shift indicator light.
A short anywhere in any of these circuits would blow the fuse.
I'd still try the old switch first, just in case...

No, I probably DID mess up something although I have heard of the electrical gremlins.  I changed the switch because I heard the air rushing noise from under the dash and the headlights wouldn't go up.  I did put the old switch back in and even ordered a new one from midamerica.
Great info about the tracing.  Found the short to the radio!!!  The wire that dims the radio light when the light switch is pulled out was off and touching the dash.
Great info!!!!!!!
I love this web site!!!!!!

Great news! At least ya got it figured out, eh?!

I should mention that the wiring diagrams do not show all of the optional equipment, such as stereos and stuff, but I should've thought about the other lights that operate off of the light switch.

Glad ya gotter fixed!!
