I do believe Larry is right. I think the alarm in this time period was merely a device that activated the big honkin (literally) horn by the drivers side rear wheel.
I don't have the schematics to back this up and mine was disabled prior to my purchase.
Maybe Dr Adams will view this in the near future and make a estute comment that will add value.... Oh Dr Adams pagin Dr. Adams...

You can unhook the alarm horn, but the system will still be armed, and it will drain the battery pretty quick. It would be best to remove the alarm relay.
The alarm will have no effect on the starting and running of the car...it will still start. The alarm is only a horn beeping, no more.
The alarm relay for a '79 is under the shifter console, I think. You probably armed the system when you removed the door handles. Perhaps you can fish the alarm switch out of the driver's door, and flip it off? The door key is what arms the system on the '79s.
If all you need to do is move the car, just unplug the horn, but it is up under the rear fender, above the muffler on the driver side...not the easiest place to get to. Maybe Mike(mkapp7879) will come in and let you know exactly where the relay is, but I'm thinking it is under the console on you car. If the horn is going off, you should be able to feel and hear the relay clicking under there...
