The horn on my 74 went spastic the other day, so I took it apart and found nothing broken. I jiggled it a little and it stopped. I got out, set the alarm and walked away. I got about 50ft when the alarm went off for no reason. Anyone have any experience with this problem??

Wow. I haven't had my alarm just go off, but I did have my horn go off at random. I took it apart and found that it was tripping on a little screw that can be seen when you take the horn button off.

I can't answer your questions but I have a situation with my recently purchased 74 coupe where it only has one horn that I am able to locate and it sounds really sick! I was told it should have duel horns(which would have a much better tone) but can't locate the second one or where the location and connections should be for a second horn. My alarm does not work either which may have something to do with the missing horn. Can you shed some light on this problem????

As I recall, the horn system and the alarm system on a 74 are seperate. There is a horn near the radio antenna behind the left rear tire. This is for the alarm. There are three switches that set the alarm off. There is one under the hood near the wiper motor. The other two are known as the door ajar switches which are in the door jamb near the seat back. These have become intermittent over time due to corrosion, paint, damage of some type. That is the first place to check.

I am a bit rusty at the wiring system as it has been 10-15 years since I did an work on them. But I think that this should get you going in the right direction.

I have a 72 coupe. It has a seperate horn for the alarm under the rear corner panel. My alarm tripped off randomly a few years ago. I found that the center rear storage lid button, for the convenience light inside the compartment was going bad and causing the light to come on with the lid closed. Of coarse that would set off the alarm if it was turned on, and it did have to happen at two in the morning. Good luck |cool|

I had trouble with my horn for years. It would work sprodiacally, sometimes not at aLL. It had me very frustrated. One day I decided to clean the contact on the actual horn where the electrical connector conects. I cleaned both the connector and the horn with steel wool and everyting now works fine.
