It might be part of the alarm ckt start interlock. can you give the wire colors going into the relay then it would be easier to identify on the electrical diagram

Well Jim, my '81 doesn't have anything on the outside of that cover, just the 2 small studs that would give the assembler the option. The threads don't appear as though anything was ever there. I'd help you research but as I went to open the hood the right side latch failed to open, so after opening it the hard way I see I have to get a new cable pronto so I'm indisposed temporarily.

Ooops. Sorry 'bout that rr. I just ass..umed all 81's were the same. DUH. The wires appear to be 1 black and four brown after cleaning them as best I could. Maybe "light brown" or heavily faded orange for those four, but not near tan.

Man, I hate that for you ace. Had that happen to me once after being pulled over by a cop who loved the car and wanted to look at the engine. Sort of embarrassing. I keep saying I'm going to install an emergency release but it keeps getting put off. Need to move that up on my priority list.
That's probably the A.I.R. relay. I don't think its the EGR relay. But it could be a TCC or EGR relay. Hard to tell by the pic. Your MAP sensor is located on that same bracket too.

Thanks sarge. I was thinking maybe a starter interrupt for the theft system. I'll follow up on your suggestions and see what I can track down. I may be seeing the wire colors wrong. I think "bubba" may be working part time for my optician. lol
Is there a part number stamped on the relay? That may help narrow down what it exactly is. I believe the starter interrupt relay is located in the center console.
According to my schematics, the A.I.R. relay will have the following wires:
BLK/WHT- 2 wires into 1 ???
BRN
DK.BLU
BLK/PNK
TCC & EGR Relay wires:
TAN/BLK - 2 wires into 1 ???
PPL
TAN/BLK -1 wire
BLK/WHT

Hadn't even considered the part number sarge, thanks. A quick search shows EGR, ABF, EFE, ACV.
