I recently posted several questions in "Dangling Wires".Most of the problems have been resolved except for #3.(No high beam indicator light, no brake warning light, and left turn signal indicator in dash works but right does not even though all directional bulbs on the exterior work including the hazards.)
Before I open pandora's box and remove the instrument panel, are there any precautions I should be aware of with regards to what lies behind it? The manuals only mention removal of the speedo cable once you pull it out far enough to get your hand back there. Is this a pain to remove or relatively simple? If the bulbs to the brake warning light and and high beam indicator are fine how can I check the circuit board to see if that needs to be replaced? If this needs replacement what advice can you give to assist in a sucessful transplant? Thanks. |thumb|

I believe you own a '78 like I do. Removing the speedometer/tach assembly is petty straghtforward. Remove the panel under the steering column as that gives you a bit more clearance and can push the steering column down a bit as needed. I would wrap masking tape around the steering column first so it doesn't get scratched.

When you remove the screws and start to pull the assembly out, you'll have to reach around and disconnect the speedometer cable...not difficult unless you have big hands like I do. After that, it pulls out pretty easily and everything on the backside is very obvious how you do things...unplug the harness from the circuit board and the assembly lifts completely out.

While you have it out, I would replace all the light bulbs, whether they need it or not. This isn't something you want to do a lot.

Look the printed circuit over...the contacts are pretty flimsy and can bend or tear easily. If you need to replace it, it's easy to do. Like I said...once the assembly is out, it's pretty self-evident how to do everything.

Good luck.
