has anyone else got a kill switch,i think that's what it's called, in there car? i have a red plastic key with a metal ball on the end that has to be used to turn this switch. if you don't the car don't go |biggrin| also nothing else will work in the car. is this an aftermarket do-dad that was available or a factory option? also does anyone know where to get anymore of these funny looking red keys? thanks! |biggrin| |cheers|

Vette(s): SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
Sold - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
A P.O. had installed a kill switch/hood lock in "The Toy". It is located under the left side of the dash. A simple push in of the button locks the hood and kills the spark. The engine will still turn over, just won't start (rather embaressing when I've forgotten that I armed it!). A funky looking key unlocks and pops the button out and then you're good to go.

I have no idea who manufactured the unit (a question for the P.O. should I ever find him/her) but it is a real clean install and simple to use.

While prepping to replace the carpeting I got a look at the bottom of the kill switch/hood lock mechanism. Stamped there are the words 'Chapman "Insurance Man"'. I tried a few web searches through Yahoo, Lycos, and Google and didn't find anything that was a complete match. Sorry!

try to find any info you can on the alarm controls as well as any numbers on it. my C3 came with an alarm installed that did not work. rather than trar it out and install a new one i did some digging and found who made it. even though it's not being made anymore i was able to find a new one on ebay for $40. by replacing the main board it now works great and didn't have to reinstall a complete system. post what info you have here and i'll see what i can come up with.

Has anyone installed one of these switches? And where do you buy something like this? Currently my baby has no theft protection at all and while I'm not concerned about the factory stereo being stolen (car never sits outside at night anyway), I am concerned by the professional thief who only needs 30 seconds to disappear with the entire car while I'm in the hardware store for 5 minutes. I've been trying to dream up something un-orthodox since the pro's have probably seen everything else.

gary
on the red key is the name WELSCO.....that is the only name or identifying mark on the thing. on top of the battery compartment is a black switch that the key goes to.when you open the compartment there are two wires with copper heads on them.one is from the switch to the battery, the other is from the switch down into the car. I'm assuming when you turn the switch on there is contact so you can start the car and when you turn it off the wires come away from each other and are locked apart so she no go. |biggrin| tha's about all i have been able to find out so far. |wavey|

Rich, you can't beat the pros without leaving a live tiger in the car. |haha| A hidden fuel shutoff will stop most joy riders, they will only get a few feet and will be stuck blocking traffic, so they run away. Joe
