Look at it from this angle. Would you have rather be cruisin along in the middle of nowhere when the wire decide to arc? Fire in the hole goin down the road... Thank your lucky stars the car was in the right place at th right time when that happened. You had an angel protectin your ride my friend.
As for Fed Ex this is their crappy policy. They don't need a signature. Part of my duties include the management of a receiveng area for a large industry. I have had plenty of conversations with area rep. for the same issues. I don't choose to utilize them for my personal stuff. (we don't agree on the integrity of shipments).
I would file a freight claim against them or at very least suggest to the supplier not to utilize Fed Ex services. Fast isn't always best!!!

Vette(s): 1974, 454 with 4 on the floor, matching numbers.

Car has been towed to the shop. Even though I had the trickle charger on it since last night it was still dead as a door knob this afternoon . The shop is looking at possibly replacing the wire harness, battery, and alt.

BTW, I just test drove a 2003 Z06, one owner, with 12,000 miles. Very very tempting
