Vette(s): 1968 Corvette Roadster, 427,12.25-1 comp ratio, 582 Hp, 4 sp., 3.36, Steeroids rack and pin. pwr strg, pwr bks, serp. pulleys, 1968 (Factory) L-88 Hood, Vette Br. suspension, Both tops, MSD ign.
I have a complete MSD system on both my 1968 big block Corvette and my wife's 1988 Corvette Coupe. The MSD equipment works very well and has been very reliable. The quality of their components is incredible, and they work even better than they look!
My 1968 has the Billet MSD Distributor (with a mechanical tach-drive built in), a MSD coil, 8mm wires, adjustable Shift light and the MSD 6AL box with over-rev protection. I have also installed a Digital retard box which helps start my High compression beast by pulling back the advance while it cranks so I don't have to sound like I have a dead battery all the time.
My wife's 1988 Vette has a MSD conversion as well, it has a MSD 6AL box with their spark control device in the cap, a very high voltage coil assembly, their cap and rotor and their 8mm Plug wires. I wouldn't put on my wife's car if I didn't trust it completely.
The MSD people have been more than helpful with questions and have excellant tech support. The systems I have both produce a serious spark which can be heard across the garage when I test it or play with them.
I spoke to Jacobs, Holley and Accell before I decided and found the MSD choice to have been a smart one. I was impressed by the sheer numbers of MSD units out there on cars at the track, that made me try my first one. When I tested the first box and the spark plug sounded like an arc welder I was hooked!
There are some neat boxes out there by the competition but the MSD is the big one in this market place, they have worked hard to get where they are and I will remain a faithfull customer of theirs.
There is a company down south that is called "Davis Unified Ignition" (D.U.I. for short and catchy!) and they are supposed to make an incredible HEI system. They will be found in some Car magazines advertising, frequently their equipment is used on build ups that the magazines like "Hot Rod" and "Chevy High Performance" run. I have heard great things about their equipment. You might check them out if you want a serious HEI system with many modifications
Good luck and I wish you the best in this endevour!
