I have installed the MSD ignition under the dash on the passenger side. I made my own aluminum braket and finally riveted into the firewall. I put in a new grommet in the firewall and ran the wires through it. Car runs fine.

I put mine up behind the drivers side wheel well. Considered other locations, but this seemed like an accessible spot. I haven't hooked the stock tach up cause my dash is all apart. Huge difference with the MSD though!!!
Let me know how it goes with your tach.

I was having real issues with the cheap Procomp HEI that came with the 383. So I got a 6AL-2 programmable. http://twitpic.com/2jree3 I will lock the distributor out when it finally goes to get tuned on the Dyno and program the timing curve then.
Here is the link to MSD instructions for GM tachs. Note #3 Bypassing the inline filter.
http://twitpic.com/2lf2h7 This is a aux fuse panel ran off the 12V power going to the HEI to power the MSD box and the Dual Electric fans. I considered one of these for under the hood: Terminal Block http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/10521/10002/-1?parentProductId=758462

The tach wire just plugged into the MSD module. It did not work properly with the filter, so I took that out of the circuit.
