Hey there Vette Fans!!

Question for you wiring gurus!! There is a heave guage red hot wire with battery power coming ot of the wire loom on the left side fender right beside the alternator. It has a black plastic spade type connector on it from the factory and it's just hanging out by about an inch from the loom.

Any guesses wat this wire is for??

Thanks as usual!!!

How big is the connector?  It sounds like it should go to the back of the alternator at the battery terminal.  What is on the alternator now?

Its a similar sized wire also coming out of the same wire loom.

Possibly the 12v feed for the underhood light?? I can't think of anything else offhand in that area that would require 12v, and have a spade term. The 12v for the alt should have a round eyelet term. on it.

My 77 had the same wire sticking out in the same location. My best guess, looking at the wiring harness, is that it could be for my now ripped out factory alarm system.

Good luck

Alan

Went through all my motor pics on the computer and finally found the right one. Definitely the under hood light.  Mike

Hey Mike and all,

Thanks as usual for the research! So does anyone have an underhood light hooked up similarly? I'm just perplexed that it's such a heavy guage wire - probably 10....

Thanks again !

Happy spring everyone! Just took the oldgir fo a great spin through the back roads today. What a feeling of revitalization!!!

All 3 of mine are like that under the hood. According to the wiring diagram, that red 12gauge is just spliced into the red 12 that goes to the alternater battery terminal. The light is protected by a 20 gauge fused link. They probably just didn't want to splice a smaller wire into the red 12 without some protection in case the wire got pinched by the hood support or hinges.  Mike

ok heres one for you- on this same note, i noticed a PINK or ORANGE  wire coming out from the driver side fender with a white connector, right near the fenderwell vent. can anyone id that? this is a weird thing, and it looks like its supposed to be plugged in somewhere. right now my power door locks do not work, nor does my windhield fluid pump.
