Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.

I'm about out of my wits with this. I've replaced the temp sender for the 3rd time, all three times the senders have been from Lectric Limited and all three haven't worked right. The first one didn't work so I assumed it was my gauge and changed it out, it wasn't my gauge. The 2nd one read 30 degrees hotter than the actual temp, the third one doesn't work at all, I checked my gauge again and it works. I'm tired of deaking with Lectric Limited and I'm wondering if anyone else sells senders with the right plug end for a '69?

Thanks,

Matt

MY temp guage on my 76 does't work either--how do you determine if  guage is good or sender is bad--is there a way to test the sender with a volt meter

Vette(s): Just finished 2 years of Blood, Sweat, & Tears restoring my 69 Coupe. Crimsom Red, 427, vacuum removed, Shot of Steeroids, Killer Lights, 5 Speed, still working on small things but she is back on the road.

When I repaired my problem with the temp gauge I ordered a matched set from Ecklers.  I read somewhere that is the best way because they some how adjust the gauge with the sending unit to calibrate them together for a more accurate reading.  They sent me a sending unit to mount in the block and a new temp gauger.  I ordered a new wire (green) with the correct tips, gauge of wire and the insulation on the wire from Zip.  When I install them they worked great.  I measured the temp at the thermostat and was only off a couple of degrees.

Hope this helps

Matt:

I went through this with my 69 also. I bought an expensive temp sender from one of the Corvette suppliers and it didn't work any better than the old one. I searched several forums and found that there are some nuances to getting a corret reading depending on resistance, but that is also affected by other things - quite complicated. Bottom line - I bought a Wells TU-5 temp sender from a local Advanced or NAPA parts store and it works great.

I did 2 things. I went to the auto parts store and bought an aftermarket gauge for a 2nd reference. Then, I went to a mechanic's shop and they used an infared temp sensor, both read 195-200 degrees.

Tony,

I measured mine as Matt did, with a infrared temp sensor.  I measured it at the thermostat housing.  It was within 5 degrees of what was on the temp gauge.
