I just pick up a Pioneer DEH-1600. I plan on installing it this weekend if the weather is nice a enough. Any advice would be appreciated.

A new head unit is usless if the speakers are shot. If they are the old OEM ones, get some new ones also. I am not sure what sizes work on a '73 but my '79 used two 4x6s" up front and I made boxes for two 6x9s" in back. Also the speaker wires may be insufficent, I had to run all new speaker wires. Also Since you are going to go at highway speeds with the tops off, you will crank the volume up high to hear the stereo over the wind noise. You may want to put on some bass blockers on the 4x6's to prevent distortion from too mush bass being fed to those little speakers. let the bigger 6x9's handle the deep tones and the fronts do the high tones. A bass blocker is a capacitor that is wired on the positive side of the speaker wire leads. If you mention this to a stereo sales man he should know what your talking about. they cost under 8 bucks. For speaker brands, pioneer speakers are ok but my personal favorite brand is Infinity. I used kenwood brand 4x6's and they are great too. This is from a 22 year old, loud music lover that built alot of systems before I got into vettes.

Thanks, I am not using any of the stock system, the radio in there now is a Auto-one tape player with a set of 4x10's in the back. They are only a few years old 90 watt. I don't have any up front so I may add some behind the kick panels.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the pics. Do you plan to put any kind of DIN adapter over the cutout to hide the remains of the original shape, or are you just going to put the face over the cutout?

I am looking for an adaptor that will fit but if I don't find one I like I am going to modify the bezel with JB-Weld and custom make it look better.

I thought I would update the project. I made a trim bezel and fit everything to the cluster. I will start to put the car back together as soon as it warms up out in the garage.

Brian,
That looks great!

Just goes to show that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get it done. Thanks for the update.

I'm installing a new stereo in mine also. Did you figure out which wire behind your console is aways hot?  I've got one that's hot when the ignition is one but I'm struggling trying to find one always hot.

The wiring diagrams I've got aren't detailed enough.
